What is Wikipedia?

Wikipedia is a free encyclopaedia, written collaboratively by the people who use it. It is a special type of website designed to make collaboration easy, called a wiki. Many people are constantly improving Wikipedia, making thousands of changes per hour.

Don't be afraid to edit

Anyone can edit almost every page. Find something that can be improved and make it better—for example, spelling, grammar, rewriting for readability, adding content, or removing non-constructive edits. Remember – you can't break Wikipedia; all edits can be reversed, fixed or improved later. Wikipedia is allowed to be imperfect. So go ahead, edit an article and help make Wikipedia the best information source on the Internet!

Want to join the movement?

Want to become part of a project that aims to increase Wikipedia coverage of iconic buildings around Johannesburg with historic and heritage importance?

Then enter our Joburgpedia Writing Contest. The competition runs from 9 May 2015 to 30 June 2015 and is open to residents of Gauteng, as well as schools who wish to participate as a collaborative input unit.

Articles are judged on quality and completeness and should focus on a Johannesburg Heritage Site of choice. Articles can be submitted in English or another local language of choice.

Articles must be submitted online via Wikipedia.

Participants are required to open an account (create a username, which is free of charge) and write their articles online.

Usernames must be sent to theresa.hume@wikimedia.org.za to register your entry.
